All Day T Hunt Report
7/26/2025
WA6RJN
For this hunt I wanted a mini vacation having been through a busy year at work. I had stayed at a hotel in
Palm Desert before and decided to try it again. I arrived Friday night and after a good sleep I ventured out
to hide Ts.
A few sites had been selected as there always seems to be surprises when hiding the main T. This hunt
was no exception. I had traveled down Dillion Rd to the road I had selected that went up into the hills. I
found a gate a few hundred feet up the road that demarked the Riverside nature zone.
On the way to my first alternate site, I checked out a another site that wouldn’t work for the main T but
had a great view to the west. I hid T5 (50mW) there just off Ford Rd, south of Dillion Rd.
Still looking for a place to hide T1, I went north up Long Canyon until the pavement ended then continued
up the dirt road until I found a site that had to do (out of time). I set up T1, an 11 element beam fed by
amp putting out 70 watts pointed west toward San Gorgonio pass and the mountains that border it. N6MI
reported he could barely hear it but was able to get a direction of 100 degrees.
T10 (2W) was on a hill on a power line road and used a whip. It had a 270 degree view.
T8 (4W) was located part way up Edom hill. It had what I called a “pizza” antenna which was actually a
stacked folded dipole. Not sure why 2 hunters had difficulty finding it. It radiated quite well.
T9 (50mW) was located at the junction of Varner Rd and Date Palm Dr., between T10 and T8.
T3 (500mW) was on the embankment of the west branch of the Silva Wash, south of I10 and east of
Gene Autry Trail.
4 of the Ts were collected on Saturday night. The next morning, I collected T5 and T3. Both were working
quite well. T5 could be heard from the junction of Mountain View Rd and Varner all the way to T5. It did
fade to a very weak signal after the Liquor Market on Dillion Rd. but got strong again a mile or so farther
east. The N6MI/AF6O team was the only one to find it.
